After graduating from the University of Oregon with a degree in journalism, Laura worked as a publicist for the annual Oregon State Fair in Salem, where her duties included preparing and distributing press releases to more than 200 media sources, performing live
and pre-recorded radio reports, conducting informational interviews and coordinating day-to-day events.
Following that temporary assignment, she served as marketing assistant and office manager for Sign Enhancers, a nationwide distributor of educational software and videos designed to teach American Sign Language. In addition to assisting with production, updating and distribution of press kits, advertising materials and catalog copy, Laura wrote and distributed company press releases to trade publications, resulting in national publication, and coordinated exhibits and trade shows including personnel, booth reservations and travel arrangements. She maintained a system for shipping and receiving of the company product line, and managed a database of more than 16,000 customers.
The experience working with Sign Enhancers motivated Laura to work for three years towards becoming proficient in American Sign Language.
Her background also includes more than 10 years experience in the publishing industry, working with both community and daily newspapers in editorial and advertising capacities.
Laura is involved in her community, and has worked to generate funds and publicity for various organizations including:
United Way, YMCA, and the American Cancer Society. She also serves on the publicity board of the local downtown association.
Laura enjoys continuously learning new things and experiencing different cultures. She has visited states throughout the U.S., and has travelled internationally to both Australia and Vietnam, where she spent two weeks as part of a citizen diplomacy group working to improve the lives of Vietnamese families impacted by landmine accidents.
